As big fans of the Barefoot Contessa's style, were thrilled to read Maxwell's design notes on Ina Garten and House Beautiful's 2009 Kitchen of the Year (on display now at Rockefeller Center). Although we love us some Ina, we can't quite justify the plane ticket required to see the exhibit in person. Instead, we've been poring over the many videos taken at the event which feature Ina's advice on decorating and designing a kitchen. We found her words on colors in the kitchen particularly interesting...
She prefers spare use of color in the kitchen, instead letting the food, flowers, and company take center stage. While we've always admired her various pared-down kitchens featuring black, white and muted grays with fresh pops of green herbs here and there, we also love the look of a brightly colored kitchen (as seen here or here) too. Perhaps for filming a stark backdrop is preferred (hmm, someone might want to tell Sandra Lee), but for a regular home maybe it's not so important. In the end it's whatever works best for you and your space, but we wanted to gauge what you prefer for color palette in the kitchen - bright and colorful, subdued, or somewhere in between?
See the full video of Ina talking about color here.

Personally, I like a white kitchen . . . walls, appliances, cabinets, countertops. To me, it looks fresh and airy and white has always been in style for kitchens.

i like a neutral kitchen with a little bit of color, maybe in a backspash or a few accessories... i like the idea of the food/company taking center stage though.
i looooove ina and barefoot contessa! her kitchen is like a dream, we are going to redo our kitchen once we get our "2009 first time homeowner tax credit" and im tryinfg to convince my hubby a white kitchen would be lovely but hes really feeling the wood cabinets-which are nice too
lol about the sandra lee comment, why does she change her kitchen accessories constantly when shes all about easy and affordable? i wasnt aware new accessories in your ENTIRE kitchen for every holiday, season, and event was affordable!

Bring on the color! (And while you're at it, leave the islands in the sea. Anything rooted to the floor in the center of a room is a bit creepy to me.) Fitted white kitchens remind me of doctors' offices. My kitchen is mainly yellow, with red and black (thank you, chalkboard paint) accents. Also with lots of "unkitchen-y" furniture pieces: bookcases, chests, a funky pedestal table and chairs from an African fleamarket.

I was actually inspired by the kitchen on "Barefoot Contessa" when planning our kitchen remodel; only we did the opposite color scheme... black cabinets and white countertop. I'm so envious of Ina's lifestyle on that show... fabulous house in the Hamptons, picking herbs in the garden, cooking wonderful yet simple meals for her adoring husband and a few visitors, etc.

I'm planning on redoing my kitchen, using IKEA cabinets, and my preference was for the Nexus brown wood. Until I saw Sarah Richardson's kitchen renovation in her first Sarah's House. I loved the white and very pale gray cabinets, the white and gray marble countertops, and the superb lighting. I can't afford marble, but I think I'm going for white cabinets and appliances now. And pale taupe and gray are also favorite colors. I can see it now... :)

My boyfriend calls my kitchen my "Ina Shrine". And it is! I often ask myself, when it comes to cooking and kitchens, "What would Ina do?"

I feel the same way! Same with Giada, and her breezy home by the ocean. It reminds me of the feeling I used to get when I was a kid and I watched soap operas while on summer break. Don't these women ever work? Their lives are full of sunshine and dinner parties. Is my bitter showing? :)

I'm with you GreatFriend! I am definitely drawn to anything Ina and, in that same sort of vein, the kitchen from the movie Something's Gotta Give. I also think islands are fantastic, I mean what better way to bring people together in a room that is the heart of the home.

Went to Rockefeller Center today to see Ina Garten's kitchen...very disappointed because I DID NOT GET TO SEE THE KITCHEN. I had read that the kitchen was open for free coffee each day from 9 to 12. I arrived today at 9:50am, they said Al Roker was in the kitchen and it would open at 10am ( interesting, I did not see Al through the windows humm)....at 10am, they said we could not go in because THE FREE COFFEE which was suppose to be ready at 9am was not ready, I said don't need coffee want to see kitchen. no go.. At 10:15am I had to leave, but I heard that they delayed the opening until 10:30...no nice....

I've been viewing both the film Something's Gotta Give and Ina's show for ideas to pull into my kitchen renovation. In the end, because I want more light bouncing around a fairly dark space, I think it'll be white cabinetry for me (though I considered painting the cabinets a color or staining them dark, etc) and darker stained butcher block or wood counters (for now, because they're inexpensive using IKEA, manmade or natural stone is too costly). I think for this house I'd like to keep it fairly classic/somewhat neutral and then use color in the accents because, since renovation is fairly pricey, I can change the accent colors anytime the seasons change or my mood does.
