apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Sonoma Ranch by Walker Warner Architects

12-1-08 sonoma1.jpgWhen we spotted this lovely Sonoma County farmhouse, we think our mouths fell open. It's light and airy, and has nice, simple lines. What more could you want?

12-1-08 sonoma2.jpgWell, great dining areas, reading nooks, open beam ceilings, and a U-shaped configuration surrounding a courtyard don't hurt.

The bones of this house are heaven, but it's awfully pale. The living room is just a giant blanched space. I would love to see it grounded with a vibrant rug.

This is new construction?? Wowza. It looks like it's been there forever, only better.

A little too country for my taste... but the spaces are to die for. I especially love the doors that open up off of the indoor dining area.

Plus, who can turn down a built-in book case?

My bags are packed. When can I move in?

This place is stunning, inside and out. Great job.

Best part about this house... we don't see the GARAGE in any shot. Can't stand these cookie cutter homes where from the street it looks like the garage makes up 2/3 of the home, its the first thing anyone sees - its like, "hello, this is where my car lives... and I have a nice little room back here for me too - welcome!" =P

chaunceyd - I agree! I am definitely a fan a garage that either flows seamlessly with the rest of the house, or is tucked away! Too often in my own neighborhood is the garage the thing that stands out the most... and it's usually the same people that are building houses far too big for their lots!

Other than the courtyard, the built-in benches and bookcases, I don't like it at all. The exterior is a mess and the roofline with the pop-up dormers doesn't seem well-considered. Plus, the scale of the house is too big for the style of architecture. If it had been built at about 2/3 the size it is now it might have worked better.

The setting is beautiful, though, and you can tell they used nice finishes on everything. And of course I wouldn't turn it down if someone offered me a chance to live there. :)

i think that it is a BEAUTIFUL house. couldn't agree more with the comment about garages, i hate when all you see is a garage! the house could definitely use some color though.

I love everything about this place - including the grand scale and the restful, neutral palette.
