Inspiration: Blackboard Cabinets

12-8-08 blackboard.jpgWhile the practical side of us says, "What the heck? Who wants chalkboard dust on their dishes?" the impractical side says, "Oo, don't you love the black backdrop?"

So we're thinking that perhaps just using black paint on the back wall of a cabinet is what we would do. But perhaps you like the idea of blackboard paint?

I like blackboard paint in offices and play areas, hallways and such, but not really the kitchen. Though I cook - a lot - and can Totally see myself using it... the dust/food factor kinda freaks me out....

I do like the look of black paint :)

If you like the dark color, paint it a dark color.

my response to this probably has a lot to do with the fact that i don't cook--ever, really. i like this--the blackboard thing was beginning to feel tired to me, even though i'd liked it a lot before, and this makes it unique. very few people would have it here because of the practicality factor--i love it, because it's unique, quirky, and because my kitchen functions mostly as an aesthetic space and as alcohol storage.

Forget chalk dust in the food - wouldn't kitchen grease wreak havoc on the blackboard paint?

true about the dust. But it does look cute and I like the idea of making yourself notes about recipes... but alas, would most likely end up looking dirty and silly.

I think a dark background sets off the dishes beautifully, but blackboard paint? No. Something that looks like lapis lazuli? Oh yes.

It looks great, but I must agree that it's wildly impractical. Dust is one thing, but you would probably have to remove items from the shelf every time you wanted to write some of your words of wisdom. But the black backdrop as such is really beautiful! It looks really good with the red/white/chrome.

I've been thinking about painting the back of these shelves black. (Not chalkboard, just black) What do you guys think? The countertops are black granite, then we have glossy white subway tiles as a backsplash.
And matte or glossy paint? Thanks!

I think the grease collection on the chalkboard paint is what bothers me the most, although the dusk on the dishes isn't that fun, either. But if the kitchen is either relatively big and open OR well-ventilated, OR you're like me and pretty much almost never cook, that might not be that much of a factor.

But... most spaces on this site ARE small, and the point of at least one part of this site is to encourage people to cook. BUT... maybe one could cook things with less grease?

I only find grease on my stove and the hood, and I have a very small kitchen. That said, I'm over chalkboard paint.

I used chalkboard paint in our kitchen and use liquid chalk marker that they use in coffee shops. No dust but the downside is it is hard to erase when you let the ink dry on it for too long (one week).

See it here: http://ayoska.wordpress.com/2008/09/08/chalkboard-paint-ideas/

I painted my cabinets with chalkboard paint.
The inside is painted with magnetic paint and I use that one section of cabinet as a household organizer. I haven't had a problem with grease or dust, really.

This is right up there with the wall-decal trend...

...and their time is officially over.

Not interesting to me whatsoever, but I *did* look up the word "sagacity" and feel ever-so-smart now....
