One of the articles that intrigued us in this weekend's LA Times Home and Garden section featured three different lofts in the Broadway Hollywood building. Although they had similar floor plans, each loft has a distinct style. While we found them all noteworthy, there were a few ideas in the one belonging to Ivana Milivecic that we'd consider bringing into our own home...
One detail that particularly had us swooning goes in the "why didn't I think of that?" category. Otherwise plain cabinet door are trimmed with the nailheads usually reserved for upholstering furniture. While plain silver is the choice here, depending on your decor, dimpled or brass or antiqued studs might be more to your liking. Here, the studs (a/k/a upholstery tacks) dress up kitchen cabinets. They could just as easily be used on bathroom cabinets or freestanding furniture. White paint and lucite handles finish off this glamourous look.

I loved Dave Navarro's loft. I'm doing my living room in as close a copy as I can. Since he wanted it to look like a bordello (crossed with a high end hotel room), I don't know what that says about me.
The mirror back splash in the kitchen is a work of art.
These cabinets are to die for. I had a 'why hasn't anyone thought of that before' moment.

really like those cabinets a lot---must of took hours and hours to do that. Getting them even would be really hard. Unless someone has a formula for doing it. I guess pre punching the holes before hand and lots of measuring before starting the job.

studs and kitchen grease really make no sense...and a bathroom with them would be even dumber. clean surface in a kitchen, or bath, are not just style, they're about easy, clean, disease free living.
stylishly silly, even if you have a maid.

Karen Vidal did this in one of the properties she designed and rehabbed. Hers is more intricate though, not as simple and clean.
Check the kitchen!!!

I have to admit - I hate these. It looks like a rebelious teenager/outlaw biker went crazy and just studded anything they could get their hands on.

I'm a poster child for crazy decoration ideas but I always keep "resale" in mind. This is pretty permanent. I wonder if this would scare off propective buyers.

I have mixed feelings on these... I think they're an interesting and unexpected detail, and could have potential for use in other locations besides the kitchen.
However, the photo shown is much more interesting than the actual "whole picture". The kitchen they are in is just plain bland, and the studs stick out like a sore thumb. I think for the right person, and the right kitchen (or preferably, someplace else in the house), it could be much better looking.

Slightly off topic, but HOW impractical would the mirrored backsplash really be? I love the look of it and I am redoing my kitchen soon, but I am worried that it will be too grimy looking? Or would it just require cleaning more often?

they would require extra attention to clean. depends on if it's worth it to you to spend the extra time.
also, mirrors are really easy to wipe down with windex. i put mirrors on the walls behind my counters once because the kitchen was so narrow. made the room feel wider, and it made facing into wall while cooking more interesting. it was worth it to me to have to wipe them down every so often.

Do you really want to watch yourself cooking?! Its never my best angle :-)
Maybe a mirrorball type backsplash would get you the mirror effect and help hide the splashes a bit in between cleanings?
