Determine Your Style
Choose Your Path

When we do housetours, one of the first questions we ask is: What's your style? In the Cure this week, we're learning that it helps to define the look or mood that you're going for to help set the tone for the rest of the journey. Having trouble? Maybe some examples will help:

As do I!

What if I just want to make my house... comfy. Lol! I like Mid-century modern but I also really really like modern cottage/farm.

Any ideas?

I think I'm gonna call my style a Modern Jewelbox. Or maybe, a Minimal Jewelbox... or is that too much of an oxymoron?

I just saw that page out of the Domino Big Book of Decorating yesterday featuring the Mid Century Elegant style and it gave me that final push to purchase the book. I subscribe to the magazine and have seen that room but had never seen or noticed it defined as a certain style, that is definitely the look I go with, mainly because my husband is more traditional/formal and I would go all Mid Century if he would allow so the style just came out of "marrying" the two. Though I would have to add in an extra bit to truly define our style: Mid Century Eco-Elegant.

Determining your style is a critical first step in decorating your home. As I tell my clients, you may admire many styles but there are often only a few you would live with so focus on those. Recognize this and shopping becomes a lot easier!

What's your style?

I used to think I was sort of aiming for shabby chic (at least in my bedroom), only with green and orange instead of pastels, but I also sort of identified with the midcentury elegant.

I suppose I could just say that I want more of a traditional style with a few modern elements, cause I think that would be pretty descriptive. But it really doesn't help me with the room, because traditional describes everything from my mom's house to my grandma's to the photo in the post.

That "traditional" still looks rather modern to me. :P

According to the options in the book, I'm pretty sure I'm organic modern. I love natural pieces (wood/stone with rough edges), lots of antique Japanese stuff, and the clean (usually white) lines of the kinds of things you'd find in Real Simple.
