AT Reader Tip: Hanging A Frame With Two Holes The Easy Way

090308-hanging.jpg Last week we brought you a tip that was tried and true when it came to hanging frames with 2 hook backs. It was simple, easy and has been used in our house for years. We were feeling pretty good about it, until we read a comment from an AT reader that was so fantastic, we just had to share it with you. Click through the jump to see their advice!

When we read this comment we had the "Well duh" moment of clarity, complete with a smack on the forehead. It's so simple and even easier than using masking tape (like in our first entry).

*heatherleaf*'s advice was left in the comments as to how she tackles this situation.

"What?
Why go through all this trouble?
I just thread the holes with picture-framing wire, knock a nail in the suitable place in the wall, hang, and bam, done!
"

This suggestion of course is easier, and only requires 1 nail, 1 point of reference on your wall and the thought of using a level never even springs to mind.
If you have holes on the back of your frame (instead of hooks or loops) that are recessed into the wood, you can still use the previously mentioned tape method of course.

Thanks *heatherleaf*and to all those who had the same suggestion after the initial comment! It's a great tip!

Doesn't everyone do that? I thought that was what the loops were for.

This was newsto you?

You miss the twofold reason for the two-hole method. It assures that your piece remains level, and distributes the weight. With the one-nail and wire, you might be constantly adjusting the level. Plus the piece will usually tilt away from the wall.

The two-hole method is sometimes an absolute necessity - especially for heavy objects like large mirrors, wall-mounted shelves or large pieces of artwork.

what do you do if your frame doesnt have hooks...? we've tried attaching hooks but the wood wont give and we can't drill into it without ruining the lovely frame!

sigh.

You need two hooks for a heavy object like a mirror. A mirror should absolutely not be hung on one wire, less it fall and shatter! Yeah this advice is really not news. :P

what about velcro? I use it to hand cork board and light frames (and the fire extinguisher)...

I agree about the need for two hooks. I use two hooks or nails even when hanging a picture with a wire. It keeps the picture level so you don't have to constantly readjust it.

Oneformybaby, try switching to a backing that has the hooks embedded in it. Then use framing points to fasten the backing securely to the frame.
