For the third year in a row, pumpkin crops have been down across the US. We've had too much rain and the crops are either flooding out or are growing ahead of season. This is all just a big excuse for us to get our hands dirty and to follow some simple steps on creating your own pumpkin to be used year after year. Scott over at Stoloween has made a great tutorial (that can be done with children) for those of us who are young or atleast young at heart. Or maybe you just like to get messy and make things... either way. This tutorial walks you through step by step on how to make paper mache pumpkins that can be reused form year to year (nothing rotting on your porch steps) and would be great in an indoor spaces as well (apartment dwellers, we're looking at you!).
We can see multiple applications for these, even if you didn't want to create a scary face, you could always bust out the glitter and do them up Martha Stewart style (in case you're not into spooky!). Either way, this is a great activity done in large scale or small!
The pumpkins are started by using different sized trash bags, wire and tape to make the pumpkins ridges.
This is the amount of paper used for the average pumpkin. It's a great way to utilize the Sunday paper before it hits the recycle bin!
These pumpkins are ready for some extra mache to make their spooky features stand out.

I am SO totally glittering pumpkins, though. I also saw black and white painted gourds, I think it was here on AT, last year. I want to do that too. They might blend with my squishy eyeballs, giant leech, and bloody handprints more than the glitter pumpkins.
