apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Home Design on Facebook

8-27-08 facebook1.jpgWe're a bit of a late adopter when it comes to social media; even our nearly 50-year-old boss had a Facebook profile long before we did. But though we have a hard time remembering to check for updates, we did manage to stumble across some nice interiors. Who knew social media was good for design inspiration?

Hotel Rooms by United Designers

8-27-08united1.jpg

Yes, we've been going a little hotel-mad lately, but it's Escapes month and hotels provide some of the best bedroom inspiration you can find outside the home. Our picks for today include rooms around the world decorated by British firm United Designers. Each design is tailored to its environment: clean-lined modernism in Zurich, cutting edge contemporary in Madrid, laid-back style in the Caribbean...

Escapes: May We Borrow Your Pool?

atla-082708-pool.jpgLately, all we want to do on the weekends is lie by a pool. Problem is we have no pool of our own. Luckily, we have a generous friend with the most perfect pool -- landscaped with a nice swath of green lawn, multiple and comfortable chaise longues to flop on after swimming, a lush shaded pergola to escape to with a book or the paper, perfectly temperate water and a fridge full of beer -- who enjoys sharing it. But we're still a little shy...

Craigslist Buying and Selling Etiquette

8-27craigslistetiquette.jpgOne of this week's Good Questions made us think about our own experiences with buying and selling furniture (and other items) on Craigslist. Having been on both sides of the coin, we think that Craigslist users should abide by common sense etiquette. We've experienced a few too many instances of no-shows and low ballers in our time, and we're sure we're not alone in dealing with these buyers and sellers with bad Craigslist manners. Jump below for our list of Craigslist buying and selling dos and don'ts.

AT Asia: P-hooks by pyloneer (文房具 BUNBŌGU)

P-hook2.jpg

Tired of clawing at books crammed tightly into your shelves? Struggle no longer: a solution by the name of “P-hook” has been proposed by Kansai-based designer Junji Itosaki of pyloneer. Each box contains a stack of twelve P-shaped hooks. At first sight, their purpose may be elusive, but insert the hooked portion from the top of the spine, and voila!  It even makes a great bookmark!

16" Serving Trays in Colors from Branch

8-27-bambootray.jpgWe love trays, and have found endless uses for them around our house - from serving snacks to storing makeup and jewelry, holding mail and keys as part of our landing strip, holding remotes on the coffee table - we could go on but you probably get the idea. These colorful bamboo trays would be perfect for all of the above.

Book Boxes by Pottery Barn

082708book-01.jpgWe've had this page torn out of the May issue of Domino Magazine up on our inspiration board for a while now. The simple colors and the extremely high ceilings always made us happy but not until recently did we really dissect the photo. Take a look at what we uncovered.

How To: DIY "Case Study DWR" Platform Bed

082708-platform bed.jpg Matthew Haynes of Alton, Illinois wasn't keen on spending big bucks on a bedframe. So instead, he took matters into his own hands and built his own. Click through the jump to read more about how he accomplished it for just under $200 instead of the $1500 it could have been.

Look! Small Space Living...In a Garbage Truck

082708_truck1.jpg

The sleeping loft on the top level, the built-in sectional on the mid-level, and the kitchen and home office on the "ground" level...with a path to the cab.

Big thanks to AT reader Maren who sent us these awesome photos of a guy who lives out of...garbage truck? Correction: A highly modified garbage truck. This small space is nicer than some apartments we've seen! Hardwood floors...custom kitchen (with perfect storage!)...and a comfortable built-in sectional. See all the photos after the jump...

Close up on Featherston
Melbourne

082708featherston01.jpg

[Pictured: Contour Ottoman, Scape Armchair & Dining Chair D350]
While there are many amazing 20th century designs out there that we like and respect, for us Featherston is the only name we really crave. Local furniture designer Grant Featherston (1922 – 1995) is best known for the Contour Series, from 1951-1955. This work was inspired by curves that mirror the human body and was created using a self-developed method of moulding plywood.
